  24. YOU are completely wrong!  MS-marketing didn't invent the term.  Apple did,
  25. about a decade ago, and Microsoft stole it.

  29. BTW, here's a tidbit about "Plug and Play" from the RKRM 3rd ed., chapter 32
  30. ("expansion.library") verse 2:

  32.   The Amiga AUTOCONFIG protocol is designed to allow the dynamic assignment of
  33.   available address space to expansion boards, eliminating the need for user
  34.   configuration via jumpers.  Such expansion boards include memory boards, hard
  35.   disk controllers, network interfaces, and other special purpose expansion
  36.   devices.  Some expansion devices, such as RAM boards, require no special
  37.   driver software.  Other types of expansion devices may use a disk-loaded
  38.   driver from the DEVS: or SYS:Expansion drawer, or an on-board ROM driver (for
  39.   example, a self-booting hard disk controller).

  42. Drivers on disk, drivers in ROM, and driverless boards; there's a kind of driver
  43. to every purpose.  But the evil ones have said:  Yea, let us store them in ROMs,
  44. where they cannot be upgraded; and they can do their evil work for all eternity,
  45. though buggy.  And they have said:  Let us write them in Intel code; for in
  46. truth CPU independence is an abomination to us.  Let us make PCI portable in
  47. appearance only; and the people will come and deposit their wortly possessions.

  49. Back to seriousness:  Does anybody see why the expansion protocol couldn't be
  50. extended (in theory) to configure cards that are plugged into a running machine?
